The main aim of plastic surgery is to reconstruct the cosmetic units of the human body that
have been altered by congenital malformations (congenital hare lip and
cleft palate, complex cranio-facial malformations, urogenital
malformations such as hypospadias, hand malformations such as
syndactyly), by radical oncologic surgery (mastectomy, removal of
different types of tumors) and complex traumas (road or work accidents).
Furthermore
plastic surgery has a fundamental role in the treatment of burn
patients, of the outcome of burns and in hand surgery.
Over
the years plastic surgeons have started to deal more and more with the
cosmetic aspect even in the field of reconstructive surgery, to try and
perfect surgical results and make the reintegration of patients into
our society easier, even following radical surgery.
Cosmetic surgery is part of plastic surgery.
One
should chose a specialist in Plastic Surgery if intending to undergo
this type of surgery. If the surgeon introduces himself/herself as
qualified in Cosmetic Surgery the patient should check his/her
credentials thoroughly to avoid unpleasant surprises as there is no
Medical School in Cosmetic Surgery).
Plastic
Surgery does have limits, scars can be improved but cannot be
cancelled. A Plastic Surgeon cannot do miracles and only patients
with realistic expectations will always be satisfied with the results.
