During consultation the patients requests will be evaluated, the advantages of surgery will be analyzed, possibility of complications and expectations (that must always be realistic) discussed.
As required by law discussion of possible complications (even though not frequent) and of surgical techniques will be thoroughly analyzed and at the end of consultation the patient will be asked to sign a document in which he/she confirms that consultation was exhaustive and that details of the surgical procedure and possible risks have been clearly explained.
Complications, that can be very infrequent and in some cases extremely rare, must always be known by the patient: one should not trust doctors that offer very superficial consultations that are solely aimed ad selling a "product".
As requested bt GMC rules at least 2 weeks should pass between consultation and surgery, to give the patient time to evaluate the surgical choices (cooling off period) .
If a patient decides to go in for surgery he/she will have to undergo different blood tests depending on the type of surgery and age.
There are many contraindications to cosmetic surgery, the most frequent being cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, alteration of blood coagulation, passed episodes of venous thrombosys, varicose veins (for lower limb liposuction), psychiatric pathologies or current anti-depressive therapies.
Smokers can have a higher percentage of complications because of the effect of nicotine on tissue vascularization (blood supplied to tissues) and on the healing process and in some cases surgery can be totally contraindicated. Time off smoking, necessary for any type of surgery) will have to be thoroughly discussed with the surgeon (nicotine plasters or chewing gums are not allowed).
On the day of surgery pre-op pictures will be taken and the patient will sign a form for formal consent to surgery.
When the patient is discharged he/she will be told the dates of the next check-ups and a reminder of the post-op indications.
The pictures after surgery will be taken during final check-up (about 6 months after surgery)
