this term defines the presence of rather large breasts in men and often
causes embarrassment for patients when in swimming pools, leisure
centres or beaches.
It is frequently bilateral and becomes evident
during puberty. It can be caused by hormone stimulus, weight problems
and in rare cases by frequent use of marijuana.
Gynecomastia
can be prevalently fatty, glandular or mixed. For middle sized breasts
or smallish with elastic skin surgery consists in removal of exceeding
tissue by means of liposuction (for the fat) and surgical removal (for
the glandular tissue) by means of a small incision in the lower edge of
the areola. After a few months this incision is generally difficult to
see.
For larger breasts or in the presence of skin laxity techniques may imply scars around the areola or vertical scars.
Unilateral
gynecomastia that shows up in adults must be carefully evaluated (by
means of instrumental diagnostic exams: ultrasound scans and fine
needle biopsy) to rule out the presence of cancer before performing
cosmetic surgery.
Complications: infection, haematoma, asymmetry, hypertrophic scarring
How long does surgery take?: 1-2 hours
Anaesthesia: general or sedation
Hospitalization: day hospital
Post-op: compressive bandage for 2/3 weeks
Time off work 4/8 days. No sport activities for 8/12 weeks. Antibiotic therapy for 7 days.
