Surgery is more complex than in the case of breast augmentation and requires more time and scarring can be more evident. Scars will be around the nipple-areola complex, vertical (from the areola to the crease below the breast) and in some cases it can be in the crease itself (see diagram).
Excessively heavy breasts can cause shoulder and back pain and posture changes and in some cases breasts can be painful (mastodynia).
Often patients refer changes in sensitivity of the nipple-areola complex up to loss of sensitivity in the case of very large breasts prior to surgery.
Following surgery alterations of sensitivity of the nipple may occur and breastfeeding can be compromised.
Drainage is removed after 24 hours.
Complications: infection, haematoma, asymmetry, hypertrophic scarring, suffering of skin or of the nipple-areola complex.
How long does surgery take?: about 3 hours
Anaesthesia: general
Hospitalization: 24 hours
Post-op: sport-type bra must be worn for 3 months, removal of external stitches (if present) 12 days after surgery.
Time off work 7/10 days. No sport activities for 8/12 weeks. Antibiotic therapy for 7 days
