It is a surgical technique that gives reshaping of some areas of the
body, removing localized fatty tissue by means of a cannula and of a
suction system.
Localized fatty tissue (abdomen, hips, thighs, inside of thighs, knees,
ankles) are often constitutional and do not respond to diet or
exercise. Underlining from the start that satisfying results are not
only tied to the surgeons technical ability but also to the choice of
ideal patients (good skin tone, without stretch marks and with
localized fatty tissue) is of paramount importance.
If
skin is not elastic and is sagging and fatty tissue is widespread the
results will be satisfying only in terms of profile, but there will be
skin unevenness and excess skin: the poor result is due to
unsuccessful tissue retraction.
In no case can liposuction be considered an alternative to a diet or to treatment for obesity.
Liposculpture
instead consists in liposuction (performed by means of a syringe)
associated at the same time to infiltration of the fat that has been
suctioned into the areas that require volume increase: for example
suction from hips and lipofilling (infiltration) of buttocks.
Liposuction can be performed using three main techniques: syringe, ultrasounds or a suction machine.
The
final result can generally be seen once edema (swelling of tissues) has
been reabsorbed and tissues go back to their normal consistency, that
is after about 6 months.
Patients will have to wear a
compressive garment for 5-6 weeks following surgery to reduce edema,
risk of haematoma (blood deposits) and to optimize results.
If
following liposuction patients have a lot of skin in excess a second
remodeling procedure could be necessary (for example abdominoplasty or
thigh lifting).
Complications: infection, haematoma, seroma, skin unevenness, venous thrombosis
How long does surgery take?: between 40 minutes and 3 hours
Anaesthesia: sedation or general
Hospitalization: day hospital
Post-op: antibiotic therapy, compressive garment for 4-8 weeks (24 hours per day), sun to be avoided preferably for 3 months.
Time off work and off sports depends on how many areas have been treated and the volume that has been suctione
